What do I do if my search retrieves no documents

Simple Search (Entire Site)

The CRTC web site contains over 70,000 documents. To make your search as fast as possible, use one of the search options for specific areas of the site

  • Decisions, Notices and Orders
  • Reference Centre
  • CISC
  • Today's Releases

When you are looking for documents that fall outside of these areas, you will need to search the entire site.

The simple search allows you to look for words or phrases that appear in documents.

Searching by phrase: If you select this option, the search engine will retrieve only documents that contain all of the words you typed, in the exact order that you typed them. Try to use a unique or uncommon phrase. This is the most precise way to search our site.

Using 'all of the words': With this option, each of the words you type will appear in the documents retrieved by the search engine. Try to search using unique or uncommon words.

Using 'any of the words': This is the least precise way to search since the documents that appear in your results need only contain one of the words you type in the search box.

Advanced Search (Entire Site)

The CRTC web site contains over 70,000 documents. To make your search as fast as possible, use one of the search options for specific areas of the site

  • Decisions, Notices and Orders
  • Reference Centre
  • CISC
  • Today's Releases

When you are looking for documents that fall outside of these areas, you will need to search the entire site.

The advanced search allows for more flexibility in searching. You can still search by phrase, 'all of the words' or 'any of the words', and in many cases you can look for words that appear in the title or keywords of documents.

(Note: Searching by title or keyword will only work for those HTML documents that have been indexed. If you search by title or keyword and you do not find what you are looking for, try searching using the 'full text' option from the second drop-down list).

Dates and Date Ranges: The advanced search also allows you to specify a date or range of dates for your search. This is very useful if you know approximately when a document was published.

What do I do if my search retrieves no documents?

  • Check your spelling.
  • Try searching with fewer terms.
  • If you searched by phrase, use the same words, but select the 'all of the words' option.
  • If you are looking for an item submitted for a Public Process, check the page for that Public Process (click on Public Proceedings navigation button on the top menu bar). It is possible that the document was filed in a format that our search engine cannot index.

If you need help locating documents on the site, email us or call us at 1-877-249-CRTC (2782).
