Welcome to the online edition of
Canada's Physical Activity Guide for Children.
Did you know....
- Research studies show that more than half of Canadian children and
youth are not active enough for optimal growth and development.
- Canadian girls are less active than boys with only
38 per cent of girls and 48 per cent of boys considered active enough.
- From 1981 to 1996 the number of boys and girls who were
overweight doubled and the number that were obese tripled.
The Public Health Agency of Canada takes Action
The Public Health Agency of Canada recognized that
the rapid increase in overweight and obesity, combined with low levels
of physical activity, represent a serious threat to the health of Canada's
children and youth. In response to this crisis, the Public Health Agency
of Canada and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology initiated
the development of the Guides that were recently launched
in April 2002. In the Fall of 2002, additional support resources will
be released to encourage an increase in physical activity levels in
children and youth.
How can I get copies of the Guides?
The Public Health Agency of Canada has set up a toll-free telephone
service at
1-888-334-9769 for people to order the Guides free of charge. As well,
the Guides can be ordered at www.healthcanada.ca/paguide.
