Lightning activity in major cities in Canada
In Canada, lightning is most frequent in southern Ontario, and is rare in the Arctic. The lightning flashes per year are calculated as the average number per 100 square kilometers, ie: a square 10 kilometers by 10 kilometers. (These figures are based on the average number of lightning flashes that occur over a square measuring 10 km by 10 km. In some cases, these figures will seem lower than expected. This is because lightning, particularly at night, can often be seen from a great distance, far beyond the 100 km².)
