Introduction to Meteorology and Related Sciences

MSC - EC - GC

Welcome

Welcome to the "Introduction to Meteorology and Related Sciences". This is a guided tour of the Meteorological Services of Canada (MSC), its products and services and the type of science that the MSC uses.

Some of the information seen here has been on the Internet for some time and is available through the MSC Green Lane. However, this information has been spread around on many sites. This is convenient for those who seek information on specific topics, for example acid rain. How can one get an overall look at the main issues driving MSC? Is there a logical way to look at all of this information?

Some of the information has been especially created for this guided tour, to fill in areas of knowledge that haven't been covered before. There are new courses on the theory of meteorology which are now available. One is a programmed learning course called "Meteorology, Self Instruction". We also have a course on the science of climate as well as on special topics.

This Introduction has been designed to allow non-technical people to learn about MSC and its science. It will be of interest to people in other agencies of Environment Canada or in other government departments, so they can learn more about the meteorological activities of the department. It will also be of interest to those who may wish to start a career in meteorology, climate, hydrology or another environmentally related fields. Finally, members of the general public with an interest in these areas will enjoy the tour as well.

It is suggested that you follow the order recommended in the Table of Contents to work your way through the topics. You can, of course, just use the Table of Contents to find modules that interest you. There are review questions for major modules so you can test what you have learned (this is optional).

Enjoy!
