Automated Weather Observation System - AWOS

MSC - EC - GC

WELCOME

People have always watched the weather for signs of storms, heat, cold, or precipitation. In Canada's sparsely populated land of variable and sometimes extreme climate, knowing about the weather is a priority for many people. Traditionally, surface weather observations such as air temperature and wind speed, have been recorded and transmitted by qualified employees of Environment Canada (EC), Transport Canada (TC), Department of National Defense (DND) and NAV Canada, as well as by contract observers.

The MSC designed Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) collects, processes and transfers meteorological data to weather centres where it is used in conjunction with data from other sources to produce information on current and predicted weather conditions for use in domestic civil and military aviation operations.
