Environment Canada's Patterson Distinguished Service Medal is awarded to Dr. Peter Taylor

On June 3, 1999, Dr. Peter Taylor was awarded the 1998 Patterson Distinguished Service Medal for excellence in meteorology. The award was presented in Montreal, Quebec at the 33rd annual Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) congress. When presenting the award to the recipient, Gordon McBean, Assistant Deputy Minister, Environment Canada underlined Dr. Taylor's remarkable contribution to the field of meteorology.

Dr. Peter Taylor's commitment to meteorology can be seen through his 25 years of dedicated and enthusiastic service to the area of boundary layer meteorology. In particular his work with the Askervein wind tunnel and field experiments continue to be the most comprehensive and influential study of its type. This pre-eminent service award demonstrates the value that the government places on individuals such as Professor Taylor to areas of graduate level teaching, research, and the pursuit to scientific knowledge.

Professor Taylor's meteorological career demonstrates his leadership and research capacities in particular. Dr. Taylor served as a Senior Research Scientist at the Atmospheric Environment Service (AES) for 12 years. His present position as a professor of Atmospheric Science and Applied Mathematics at York University further demonstrates Dr. Taylor's commitment to service in meteorology.

The medal is named for Dr. John Patterson, former director and controller, as well as a respected meteorologist who played a key role in the early development of Canada's weather service. The Patterson Distinguished Service Medal has been presented annually since 1954 and is Atmospheric Environment Service's (AES) most prestigious award.

Information about previous Patterson Awards winners can be found at AES's quarterly bulletin, Zephyr.
