Focus on Ontario at the “World of Solutions”

Ontario Booth

The Ministry of the Environment, in partnership with the Ministries of Agriculture and Transportation, showcased their many climate change activities at the “World of Solutions” Exhibition.

Trisha Sfalcin, senior writer at the Communications Branch of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, was interviewed on site by Canada: Daily Highlights.

Question:  What is the main message you are making through the exhibits at your booth?

We want to show that clean air and climate change are priorities for the Government of Ontario and we are taking action to tackle the issue.  By 2009, Ontario is expected to close all coal plans and that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 MT.

Question:  What is the main focus of your exhibits?

The Ontario government recognizes that air quality and climate change are serious environmental issues that must be addressed.  That is focus of the exhibit.  The Ministry of transportation has a LED light for traffic which uses 95% less energy.  Through the Ministry of Agriculture, we displayed a wind machine, a small-scale wind turbine for your home.

Question:  What do you want people to know about the impact of climate change in Ontario?

In Ontario, we are already seeing the impact of poor air quality and climate change, especially in the urban area, with an increase in air pollution. When the air is polluted the health of people and the quality of the environment suffers. We want to increase climate change awareness and motivate groups throughout the Province.  We are also working with partners to ensure cleaner air, water and land, and healthier ecosystems for the people of Ontario.
