Global Health Alert:
Climate Change Risks, Strategies and Solutions

Global Health AlertCo-organized by Health Canadaand the World Health Organization, a panel of six international speakers discussed some of the approaches used to assess climate change related health risks.

Minister of State for Public Health, Carolyn Bennett, introduced the topic by presenting the “Healthy Canadian” tree and the health goals for Canada.  ‘’As a nation, we aspire to a Canada in which everyone is as healthy as he or she can be – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.”  The tree is an engagement tool for communities that starts at the bottom with social determinants such as education, environment, and physical literacy; moves up the trunk to modifiable risks such as sense of control; and at the top, looks at quality of life outcomes.

Kenneth Maybee, CEO and President of the New Brunswick Lung Association offered his perspective on the international evidence of the linkages between human health and climate change.  “The solution comes from the work of research and policymaking as well as community groups on the ground who can deliver the message”.
