Focus on Saskatchewan at "World of Solutions"
The Government of Saskatchewan, in partnership with the Petroleum Technology Research Centres, is showcasing their many climate change activities at the “World of Solutions” Exhibition. The province is working with partners to assist the people of Saskatchewan to make the changes necessary to adopt more sustainable and climate friendly lifestyles.
Angie Desfosses, Manager from the Petroleum Technology Research Centre, was interviewed on site.
Question: What do you wish to say to Conference delegates and to the general public?
The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes that climate change is a serious environmental issue that must be addressed. With this in mind, Saskatchewan has established a climate change program that is undertaking projects in several major areas.
I can give you some examples. The Office of Energy Conservation helps the residents of Saskatchewan implement cost-effective energy conservation initiatives, the Saskatchewan Research Council provides science solutions, and the Climate Change Saskatchewan Hub assists in delivering climate change public education and outreach activities around the province.
I am representing the Petroleum Technology Research Centre. We are working with the oil and gas industry to develop a range of techniques to make oil production clean and less harmful to the environment. So, we are part of the solution! We have the largest CO2 storage facility in the world.
Question: What do you want people to know about the impact of climate change in Saskatchewan?
Agriculture represents an important sector for Saskatchewan and the climate change issue presents challenges for prairie agricultural producers. We are noticing that the seasons are being pushed back. The harvesting that we usually do in August is now done in November.
The changing nature of the Prairie environment, with warmer conditions and increased climate variability, puts stress on agriculture and increases the possibility of fires.
