“Local actions move the world!”
The press theatre in the Montreal City Hall was packed with journalists there to question representatives from the World Mayors’ Council on Climate Change.
The main message from the Mayors was direct: the best implementation of environmental policies starts at the local level. Their views are summarized below:
- Greg Nickels, Mayor of Seattle: “Half of the world’s populations live in cities. The world, therefore, needs local environmental initiatives to make concrete efforts to tackle climate change behavior efficiently.
- Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay: “As climate change continues to be one of the greatest threats to the humankind, “how can we forget cities when it comes to implementing collective greener transport?”
- Mayor Alan Milne of Kapiti coast District in New Zealand: “Local actions move the world. Climate protection requires an integrated effort, building partnerships and fostering sustainable behavior.”
The Mayors’ Council was started by Mayor Yorikane Masumoto from Kyoto, Japan, following the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol in February of this year. The Council is an alliance of municipal leaders concerned about climate change and is affiliated with the ICLEI -- Local Governments for Sustainability.
