Ingrid Koch"Climate change will affect our health, our environment, our lives and the lives of future generations."

Those the words of Ingrid Koch, a delegate from the International Youth Summit, who addressed more than 300 municipal leaders who are taking part in the 4th annual Municipal Leaders’ Summit on Climate Change.  The Summit began Monday and will end Wednesday.

For the next three days delegates will discuss climate change, share best practices, build partnerships and learn about the different perspectives from cities.  The Summit is organized by the ICLEI, in collaboration with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the City of Montréal, the World Association of Major Metropolises and the United Nations Environment Program, with the support of the Government of Canada.

The Mayor of Montreal, Gérald Tremblay, who is also chairing the Summit, opened the event by recognizing the important role of municipalities as “important partners in helping nations attain their Kyoto objectives.”  He noted the challenging task ahead of delegates who are expected to draft a Declaration to be present at the High Level Session of the UN Climate Change Conference.

Gérald Tremblay, Mayor of MontréalJohn Godfrey, Minister of State (Infrastructure and Communities) underscored the value of partnerships:  “National and sub-national Governments need to partner with municipalities.  We have some work to do to meet our Kyoto target and municipalities can definitely help us.”
