Environnment Canada's Biosphère is up and runninng and open to the public
|
Montreal, May 12, 2005 – We would like to clarify the information that was circulating on Monday, May 9th to the effect that the Biosphère was in a state of disrepair.
Current arrangements at the Biosphère, which will continue for the duration of the maintenance work, pose no danger to visitors and will in no way impair their visit experience.
The Biosphère is operated by Environment Canada, while the geodesic dome is owned by the City of Montreal, which is responsible for maintaining its infrastructure. All buildings need maintenance, and that was why the Société du Parc des Îles, at the Biosphère’s request, had sought estimates for the following work:
• Weatherproofing one of the outer walls
• Protecting the surface of the concrete shell of the lookout
• Re-covering steel beams to inhibit corrosion
Maintenance costs are associated chiefly with access for performance of the work, since the lookout is several metres above the ground.
New this summer
On May 31, the Biosphère will inaugurate a completely new exhibit and unveil its summer programming. Over the last two years, the Biosphère has completely revamped its exhibits and animation activities, offering families an experience that will be more fun, more engaging and more exciting than ever. We will also be offering visitors different activities to take up their One Tonne Challenge. Be ready to be surprised.
