Expenditure ReviewIn December 2003, the Prime Minister established the Expenditure Review Committee to ensure the government spends smarter, as part of a series of initiatives designed to strengthen the government’s financial management and accountability. The Expenditure Review Committee process consisted of a thorough review of existing programs to identify savings from low priority and inefficient spending for reallocation to higher priority areas. The government identified close to $11 billion in cumulative savings over the next five years. Eighty-nine per cent of the total savings will come from greater efficiency or working smarter.
