Climate Research Branch (CRB)

The Six Main Areas of Responsibility are:

  1. Climate Modelling
  2. Cold Climate System
  3. Measurement Science & Observation Research
  4. Climate Trends & Variability
  5. Land Process Studies
  6. Global Circulation Patterns

Climate change is a major global issue that is projected to have significant socio-economic and ecological impacts. Science has established that climate change is taking place. The Climate Research Branch is focused on providing improved scenarios of future climatic conditions to better understand potential impacts and to provide information for the development of adaptation strategies. To do this, the branch carries out research in climate modelling, climate trends and variability (monitoring and analysis), and climate systems (i.e. global, marine and the cryosphere).

The Climate Research Branch Consists of Three Divisions:

1. Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling & Analysis (CCCma)

The centre develops sophisticated atmospheric and climate models that it uses to project future climate scenarios.

2. Climate Monitoring and Data Interpretation Division (CCRM)

The division studies trends and variability in the Canadian climate and associated linkages, such as global circulation patterns, global warming and marine climatology.

3. Climate Processes and Earth Observation Division (CCRP)

The division studies the cold climate system including water and energy cycles and land surface and hydrological processes.
