CWS is a leader in many international, national and regional migratory bird conservation programs. Canada is working towards fully integrated bird conservation through the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, which addresses the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats through programs targeted at four main groups of birds: waterfowl, landbirdsshorebirds and waterbirds.

CWS works with other federal and provincial/territorial government agencies, aboriginal groups, and non-government organizations in carrying out this mandate. A Directory of Canadian Ornithologists has been compiled to provide information on the network of people working on birds across the country.
