1998 LaunchPreparing to LaunchScientists, engineers and technicians work to prepare the giant balloon for launch from their base in Vanscoy, a small town near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The project is a collaborative effort between Environment Canada, the Canadian Space Agency, Canadian and U.S. universities and private industry.
The Trans-Atlantic AdventureAfter successfully completing its mission, with the data sent by telemetry back to the ground base near Saskatoon, the balloon decides to go on an unscheduled world tour. Dodging bullets from fighter jets, the balloon crosses the Atlantic Ocean and becomes a media star. Finland Comes to the RescueAfter a journey of 9,000 km, the run-away balloon finally comes to rest on September 2, on Mariehamn Island in Finland. The payload was later recovered with the assistance of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The HomecomingThe balloon payload returns at last to the headquarters of Environment Canada's Atmospheric Environment Service in Toronto.
