About the Chance of a White Christmas
"And
may all your Christmases be white....." Irving Berlin, in his famous
song about white Christmas, put into words one of the greatest weather wishes
for Canadians. To help Canadians understand their chances of having the Christmas
of their dreams, Environment Canada has calculated the probability of having
a white Christmas in major centers across the country. A probability of 25
percent would mean that the location would have one chance in four of having
a white Christmas.
Our
experts on weather and climate have combed through 45 years of weather records,
and determined the probabilities based on the following criteria:
- a
"white" Christmas is defined as having at least 2 cm of snow on
the ground on December 25.
- a
"perfect" Christmas goes one step further, with a light snow fall
during Christmas day (at least 1 cm. accumulation), as well as having at
least 2 cm of snow on the ground
- of
course, you can get too much snow on Christmas day, and our list also includes
the greatest snow fall recorded on that day.
