This directorate provides national leadership for MSC activities in atmospheric and water monitoring, archiving and data management. This includes being responsible for establishing national standards for observing systems, and for the national archives. The directorate also provides national leadership on network design, the evaluation and implementation of new technologies and the development of planning strategies to meet current and future requirements for data. The directorate uses many approaches to fulfill the obligation to collect, store and deliver data as part of the national program delivery. In fulfilling this mandate, MSC manages a number of national monitoring networks:upper air(radiosonde, Doppler Radar, lightning, surface weather, climate, hydrometric and marine (Buoy and Volunteer Observing Ship).
