Monitoring and Reporting

Population monitoring provides data on whether numbers are increasing or decreasing over time – key information to support migratory bird conservation programs. Long-term population decreases are of great concern because they indicate a need for conservation program initiatives. Partners in Flight–Canada has produced a Canadian Landbird Monitoring Strategy which presents a new, integrated approach to monitoring, including priorities and recommended surveys, and information for volunteers who may wish to participate in them. Population status and trends in Canada's bird species is available from the Canadian Bird Trends database, and selected information is summarized in the Bird Trends newsletter. Population information for hunted species is compiled annually in the Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada report, which forms part of the process for setting hunting regulations. Information on the density of some species is compiled in the Canadian Breeding Bird (Mapping) Census database.
