Air Quality Research Branch

MSC - EC - GC

Measurements & Analysis Division

CAPMoN LaboratoryThe Measurements and Analysis Division conducts research to assess the long-term impact of human activities on atmospheric chemistry, and develops and maintains databases for air and precipitation chemistry. Divisional scientists also participate in field research campaigns into atmospheric processes, in the development of mathematical models related to global warming (in particular, the carbon cycle over some important Canadian ecosystems, and the role of aerosols in global warming), and in the provision to the scientific community and policymakers of various data analysis products related to acid rain, smog and greenhouse gases and aerosols.

Alert LaboratoryHowever, the primary focus of the Division’s research is the systematic measurement of atmospheric constituents. Divisional scientists are involved in several programs, which include - the Canadian Air & Precipitation Monitoring Network (CAPMoN) for acidifying constituents in air and precipitation; the Canadian Baseline Program, which, as part of the WMO Global Atmosphere Watch Program, provides information on greenhouse gases at several sites in Canada; and the CORE network, designed to make long-term measurements of atmospheric constituents and radiation in major Canadian airsheds. The Division also operates a number of research laboratories which support the field measurement programs, and develops and implements databases for these programs, as well as the quality assurance tools (such as RDMQ - the Research Data Management and Quality Control System) to ensure high-quality measurements suitable for scientific analysis.

The Division's work is carried out in cooperation with other Divisions, as well as other organizations involved in environmental issues. For specific projects of the Measurements and Analysis Division, see the Activities section.

Below is a list of divisional scientific personnel, their research interests and recent publications.
