Canada in Libya

The Canadian Embassy in Libya

Welcome to the Canadian Embassy in Tripoli, Libya. This Embassy represents Canadian interests in Libya.

Although Canada has had diplomatic relations with Libya since 1968, they have had a rocky past. From 1986 to 1999 they were frozen due to a series of terrorist attacks in Europe. In 1999, Canadian sanctions were lifted after Libya turned over two suspects in these events for trial. Two years later, Canada opened its embassy in Tripoli. In 2003, Libya renounced its weapons of mass destruction development programs and invited international weapons inspectors into the country. Canada welcomed the Libyan decision and called to strengthen their bilateral relationship. Both political and trade relations with Libya have been increasing over the last few years and many new opportunities to do business with this country are arising.
