AXWORTHY CONDEMNS ASSASSINATION IN NIGERIA
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today expressed shock at the murder of
Kudirat Abiola, wife of Chief Moshood Abiola, the jailed winner of the annulled
1993 Nigerian election.
"On behalf of Canadians, I extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Mrs.
Abiola, who was a tireless campaigner for the liberation of her husband and for
Nigerian democracy in general," said Mr. Axworthy. "Canada continues to call for
the restoration of democracy in Nigeria."
Mr. Axworthy expressed concern at the continued deterioration of the situation in
Nigeria, a country that was suspended from the Commonwealth at the Heads of
Government Meeting in New Zealand, last November. Canada will be consulting with
the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group and other countries on potential further
action.
