CANADA RECOGNIZES THE FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF
MACEDONIA
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today announced that Canada has recognized
the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) under its interim name and has
proposed the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
"Canada will continue to enhance and strengthen its relations with Balkan
countries," said Mr. Axworthy. "In advancing our bilateral relations with the
Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the promotion of human and minority rights
will continue to be a priority."
The subject of FYROM's formal name is a matter of negotiation between Greece and
the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The two countries signed an interim
agreement in September 1995 in New York addressing a number of other bilateral
issues.
Relations with FYROM will be covered by the Canadian Embassy in Belgrade.
