DIPLOMATIC APPOINTMENT
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy announces the appointment of Gavin Stewart
as High Commissioner to Jamaica with concurrent accreditation as High Commissioner
to Belize.
Biographical Note
Gavin Stewart (B.A., University of Manitoba, 1963) joined the Department of
Citizenship and Immigration in 1963 and served abroad in Manila, San Francisco,
Tokyo, London, New Delhi and, from 1983 to 1987, as Minister-Counsellor
(Immigration) in London. In Ottawa, Mr. Stewart held a number of positions with
the Canada Employment and Immigration Commission and the Department of External
Affairs, including Director of Resource Management and Director of Immigration
Operations. From 1987 to 1990, Mr. Stewart was Director General, Consular and
Immigration Affairs, and from 1990 to 1992 was Assistant Deputy Minister,
Consular, Immigration and Passport Affairs, with the Department of External
Affairs and International Trade. Since 1992, he has served as High Commissioner
to the Republic of Singapore. Mr. Stewart is married to Barbara Carr and they
have a son and a daughter. He succeeds Mrs. Kathryn Hewlett-Jobes.
