KILGOUR - VISIT TO NICARAGUA

January 7, 2002 No. 1

Media representatives are advised that David Kilgour, Secretary of State (Latin America and Africa), will visit Managua, Nicaragua, on January 9 and 10, 2002, to attend the inauguration of Enrique Bolaños, the newly elected President of the Republic of Nicaragua.

On January 9, Mr. Kilgour will meet with incoming Minister of Foreign Affairs, Norman Caldera and will attend an evening reception hosted by Francisco Aguirre, outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of Nicaragua.

On the morning of January 10, Secretary of State Kilgour will attend the Presidential Inauguration ceremony at the National Stadium.

On November 4, 2001, Enrique Bolaños, the former Vice-President, defeated former President Daniel Ortega in a democratic presidential election. Canada provided a mission of six observers to help monitor polling stations, as well as significant funding to Etica y Transparencia, the main Nicaraguan election-monitoring NGO.
