Knutson - Human Security Network meeting
June 28, 2002 No. 81
Media representatives are advised that Gar Knutson, Secretary of State (Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East)
will lead Canada's delegation to the next meeting of the Human Security Network in Santiago, Chile. The meeting,
scheduled to take place on July 2 and 3, 2002, will be the fourth ministerial meeting of the network. Mr. Knutson will
attend the meeting on behalf of Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham. The themes on the agenda this year include education
on human rights and international humanitarian law, public security policies and the preparation of the Human Security
Report.
"I am looking forward to this meeting," said Mr. Knutson. "It is important that we continue to cooperate to ensure people
are protected around the world."
Since its establishment in 1999, the Human Security Network has promoted international action to protect people's rights,
safety and lives. It seeks to build on the success achieved through international cooperation on the landmines campaign, and
to apply the same energy and advocacy to a range of other threats to human security. Three ministerial meetings have been
held in Lysøen, Norway (May 1999), Lucerne, Switzerland (May 2000), and Petra, Jordan (May 2001). Members of the
Network include Austria, Canada, Chile, Greece, Ireland, Jordan, Mali, The Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa
(observer status), Switzerland and Thailand.
