SECRETARY OF STATE KILGOUR TO VISIT EL SALVADOR AND HONDURAS

June 21, 2000 (3:20 p.m. EDT) No. 158

SECRETARY OF STATE KILGOUR TO VISIT

EL SALVADOR AND HONDURAS

Secretary of State (Latin America and Africa) David Kilgour announced today that he will visit El Salvador and Honduras from June 21 to 24.

The purpose of these bilateral visits is to further strengthen Canada's political and economic relations with these countries. To this end, Kilgour will officially open new Offices of the Canadian embassies in both El Salvador and Honduras. He will also discuss trade, development and regional integration issues with senior officials, as well as the upcoming Summit of the Americas, which will take place in Quebec City in 2001.

"The opening of these new offices demonstrates the importance that Canada attaches to enhancing its ties with both El Salvador and Honduras," said Kilgour. "The successful OAS General Assembly in Windsor gave Canada the opportunity to further strengthen relations with many hemispheric neighbours, and I look forward to consulting with regional officials as we prepare to host the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City next year."

In El Salvador, Kilgour and Foreign Minister Maria Brizuela de Avila will attend a ribbon- cutting ceremony at the new Canadian office in San Salvador. He will also meet with Trade Minister Ernesto Lacayo and visit two Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) projects; a youth anti-gang program and a land-reclamation/soccer field project. In addition, the Secretary of State will also tour the University of Central America.

In Honduras, Kilgour will meet with Co-operation Minister Arturo Corales and Foreign Affairs Vice-Minister Thomas Arita Valle. He will also attend an opening ceremony for the new Canadian office in Tegucigalpa, and will visit a CIDA-funded schoolhouse project at Santa Clara.
