RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TO VISIT CANADA
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today announced that Russian Foreign Minister
Igor Ivanov will make an official visit to Ottawa on September 11 and 12. The two
ministers will discuss a range of issues, including arms control and disarmament,
human security, the situation in the Balkans, and strengthening bilateral economic co-operation.
"The partnership between Canada and Russia has deepened through our dialogue in
multilateral forums and on northern issues," said Mr. Axworthy. "I look forward to
reviewing with Foreign Minister Ivanov our agenda for the upcoming UN General
Assembly and exploring with him areas where we might work together."
The two ministers have met frequently this year, including during Minister Axworthy's
trip to Moscow in February. During Minister Ivanov's second visit to Canada as Minister,
he will also meet with Deputy Prime Minister Herb Gray.
