CANADIANS TO ATTEND PUBLIC SYMPOSIUM ON WTO

International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew today welcomed the opportunity for Canadians to voice their views on international trade and development at the WTO's public Symposium on the challenges and opportunities arising from the Doha Ministerial Declaration. The event is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, from April 29 to May 1.

"The Doha agenda energized trade negotiations, creating a global partnership built around a strong social agenda," said Minister Pettigrew. "I'm pleased that more Canadians than ever are interested and engaged in these vital trade and development discussions."

Over 30 Canadians from non-governmental organizations, academia, the private sector and both federal and provincial governments, and representing a range of interests, will attend the Symposium. The three-day program includes a plenary and work sessions that will address various elements of the Doha Declaration, including market access, trade and environment, and the functioning and financing of the WTO.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade will work with the participants to develop a summary report of the Symposium's activities to stimulate further dialogue on the issues in Canada. It will be posted on the Department's Trade Negotiations and Agreements Web site at http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/tna-nac/what-e.asp in the near future.
