TRADE--BEYOND THE 30-SECOND SOUND BITE
International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew today released a volume of papers that provide an in-depth and
thought-provoking look at trade issues. The papers deal head-on with what are often contentious issues, in an
attempt to add to the public debate on and understanding of trade.
"Trade Policy Research 2002 is a forward-looking document that will stimulate thoughtful trade policy
discussion," said Minister Pettigrew. "It goes beyond the 30-second sound bite to offer insight into the thinking
behind trade policy."
This year's book builds on the research and analysis carried out in Trade Policy Research 2001. Subjects range
from globalization to liberalizing trade in services.
"Trade and investment impact on the economic well-being of all Canadians," said Mr. Pettigrew. "As a
government, we are committed to transparency and to promoting open discussion. Trade Policy Research 2002
is part of this process."
Canadians are invited to read and comment on the ideas raised. There are a limited number of hard copies
available in both official languages from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. The
individual chapters as well as summaries can also be obtained on-line at www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/eet/new-e.asp
This volume will be followed on May 2 by Trade Update 2002: Third Annual Report on Canada's State of Trade,
which will outline Canada's trade and investment performance for 2001.
