PETTIGREW ANNOUNCES CANADA'S PARTICIPATION IN
GLOBAL SUMMIT OF WOMEN IN SPAIN
International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew today announced that Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status
of Women) Jean Augustine will lead the Canadian delegation to the Global Summit of Women in Barcelona,
Spain, from July 11 to 13, 2002. Canada will be represented by a delegation of 15 private- and public-sector
participants. The first summit took place in Montreal in 1990.
"Canadian women entrepreneurs have great experience to offer the Summit, which focuses on both the
success of, and challenges facing women in international trade," said Mr. Pettigrew. "Women make
extraordinary contributions to Canada's success in global markets and to the overall well-being of our
communities by advancing the prosperity of the country."
"This Summit is a unique forum for influential women from around the world," said Ms. Augustine. "It brings
together women leaders who have furthered international trade through excellence and innovation and who, as
a result, have enhanced the status of women in international trade."
The aim of the Summit is to encourage women entrepreneurs to exchange ideas and best practices on the
development of international business opportunities. Presentations at the Summit will focus on best business
practices, the professional challenges facing women and their enterprises (including education and health),
information and communication technologies, and social, cultural and political issues.
