Poultry Processor Fined for Pollution Violation

KITCHENER, ONTARIO, June 18, 2004 – A $30,000 penalty has been levied against J.M. Schneider Inc. of Ayr, Ontario in provincial court in Kitchener, Ontario, on one count of violating subsection 36(3) of the Fisheries Act. The court order was broken down into a $10,000 fine and $20,000 to be paid to the Grand River Conservation Authority’s “Fisheries Management Plan.”

The violation was discovered February 7th, 2002 by Environment Canada as a result of the Ontario Region’s inspection program. Charges were laid by Environment Canada, after an investigation by the Environmental Protection Branch’s Ontario Regional Office. The company pled guilty to illegally depositing deleterious effluent into the Nith River.

Environment Canada’s enforcement staff investigate potential pollution offences under the Fisheries Act and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. They help ensure that companies, government employees and the general public comply with legislation and regulations that protect Canada’s environment.
