Global Reporting on Avian Influenza
The Government of Canada is devoting increasing levels of effort, domestically and internationally, to address the future risk of a human influenza pandemic. This risk has significantly increased since the emergence of new strains of avian influenza in China and South-East Asia in late 2003. Canadian posts abroad have been asked to develop pandemic preparedness plans. The Government of Canada is doing the same on a national scale, in co-operation with provincial medical authorities.
"The challenge we face today is extraordinarily complex; an unprecedented task of emergency preparedness and response. [...] Our best antidote will be the clear, honest and consistent assessment of the risks we face; the ability to swiftly gather information, and to speak with one voice [...] " - Prime Minister Paul Martin, October 25th, 2005.
