Global Issues, Peace and Security

Part of our mandate is to maintain international peace and prevent violent conflict. We do this through a range of initiatives, including collective security and defence arrangements, our human security program and conflict prevention, human rights promotion and peacebuilding activities.

Disarmament

The Global Partnership Program
The Global Partnership Program is aimed directly at reducing the threat that Canadians and the international community face by use of weapons and materials of mass destruction by terrorists. The program funds cooperation projects in Russia, and other countries of the former Soviet Union to eliminate or properly secure the weapons and materials, and to provide incentives for former weapons scientists to direct their expertise to civilian applications

Gender and Peacekeeping
Within conflict-affected communities, men, women, boys and girls experience conflict differently. To do an effective job, all those involved in peace support operations must understand the gender dimensions of conflict. Canada and the United Kingdom have developed an online Gender and Peacekeeping course which serves as a concrete tool for a gender-sensitive approach to peace-support operations.

The Human Security Network
The Network includes participation by over a dozen countries from all the regions of the world seeking to apply the same energy and advocacy devoted to eliminating landmines and a range of other threats to human security.
