Policy Research

International policy is more complex today than it has ever been in the past.  The traditional staples of diplomacy - war and peace, trade and commerce - have been joined by a wide and growing range of issues - the environment, health, global poverty, migration.

In this complex environment, where the domestic and international grow ever more inseparable, it is important that governments and their citizens be able to critically assess the world around them, identify the trends and issues that matter most and respond creatively and effectively. The Department of Foreign Affairs, through its Strategic Policy branch, is strengthening its capacity to undertake research on important international policy issues.

The Cadieux-Léger Fellowship: The Policy Research Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs Canada announces the Cadieux-Léger Fellowship 2006/7. The Cadieux-Léger Fellowship is a foreign policy research position in the Policy Research Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs which provides direct experience in a policy planning environment.

Domestic Outreach

Globalization is increasingly exerting its influence on our daily lives and, therefore, when we think of international policy we must also think of the domestic implications. The International Policy Statement (IPS), issued last April by the Government of Canada, speaks to how Canada must and will act to ensure that we embrace the opportunities of the 21st century. An essential element of the IPS is the adoption of a new approach to diplomacy which includes strengthened capacities and new partnerships with Canadians in order to project a clearer image of Canada to the world as an innovative, dynamic, diversified and globally engaged nation.
