Air Quality Monitoring Milestones

  • 2004 - NAPS Memorandum of Understanding signed, formalizing federal and provincial/territorial responsibilities for air quality monitoring within NAPS
  • 2003 - Emergence of the Earth Observing System as an international initiative for monitoring
  • 2001 - Canada-wide Standards for PM and Ozone established, using ambient air quality standards
  • 1997 - Canadian Atmospheric Mercury Measurement Network (CAMNet) established to determine mercury levels in air and precipitation across Canada
  • 1990 - Integrated Atmospheric Deposition Network (IADN) established to monitor toxic substances in the Great Lakes Basin and ensure comparable measurement methods
  • 1986 - Established critical loads for acid deposition
  • 1979 - CAPMoN established as a non-urban precipitation and air sampling network, focused on quantifying acid deposition and determining comparability of Canadian and American data
  • 1970 - NAPS established as a cooperative federal/provincial/municipal network to develop standards and monitor urban air quality
