The air issues associated with heavy metals are:

  • Many heavy metals have been determined to be toxic
  • Smog - particulate matter (PM), a major component of smog, is often a carrier of heavy metals, and control of PM emissions is one method for reducing heavy metal emissions
  • Acid rain - acidification of water and soil ecosystems may liberate heavy metals from rock and soil and increases their concentrations in the environment.
