Urban Bus Retrofit

In 2004, Environment Canada signed an agreement with the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) to design and deliver a national urban transit bus retrofit project. CUTA is working with transit authorities across the country to deliver this program.

Two hundred and thirty nine (239) transit buses, built between 1990 and 1993, have been retrofitted with Diesel Oxidation Catalysts. These older, higher polluting vehicles still travel substantial kilometers each year.

The Diesel Oxidation Catalysts reduce exhaust emissions of Particulate Matter (PM) by 20%, Carbon Monoxide (CO) by 40% and hydrocarbons (HC) which are the major component of volatile organic compounds (VOC)s by 50%. Retrofitting with Diesel Oxidation Catalysts will therefore lead to significant reductions of harmful emissions.
