For Canadian citizens in the United States outside of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia please contact the Canadian Consulate in your area.

For Canadian citizens and residents in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, the Consular Section at the Embassy can:

  • Process applications for Canadian citizenship. In most instances the processing time is approximately 3-6 months. The Embassy can provide citizenship application forms or they are available at the Citizenship and Immigration Canada Web site.
  • Provide appropriate notarial services and legalization/authentication of documents. It is best to call for an appointment if you require these services or be prepared to wait. There is a fee for all notarial services performed by the Embassy. Call (202) 682-1740 for an appointment.
  • Provide information or direct you to the appropriate Government office to obtain information on such subjects as social insurance, customs, taxation, pensions, birth/marriage/divorce/death certificates from provincial Vital Statistics offices and travel warnings.
  • Provide forms and applications. If you require an application for a passport or citizenship or any other consular-related form, please write to the address provided below. Please provide details of your request so that the appropriate form will be mailed. You should include a self- addressed, pre-stamped (64 cents) legal size envelope.
  • Provide assistance to Canadians in distress. For more information contact the Consular Section of the Embassy at (202) 682-1740.
  • Issue emergency passports. The Embassy can issue passports only in legitimate cases of emergency as predefined by consular instructions. All regular passport services are provided by the Passport Office in Hull, Quebec. They request 25 working days to issue a passport from the time they receive the completed application. Using a commercial courier service to deliver your application to Canada insures that your application will be in Hull the next day.
  • Provide assistance to Canadian citizens arrested or detained in the United States and liaise with their families.
