Working at the Embassy

The staff of Canadian missions consists of two categories: Canada-Based Staff and Locally Engaged Staff.

Canada-Based Staff (Canadian diplomats) are recruited by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) in Ottawa. They are rotational employees who have a diplomatic status when posted abroad. For information about writing the Foreign Service Exam and joining the Canadian Foreign Service, please refer to the Department of Foreign Affairs website.

Locally-Engaged Staff are recruited locally by the Embassy. Employment opportunities are posted on our website when a vacant position is to be staffed by way of an open competition. These employment opportunities are only open to residents of the Washington Metropolitan Area with valid work authorization for the USA.
