OPEN TO:Candidates whose applications are received by the closing date, who meet all of the essential requirements stated below, who reside in the Washington Metropolitan area and who have valid work authorization for the USA.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:Under the general supervision of the Technical Operations and Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the daily operation of the computerized Building Management System (BMS) and various computerized lighting control systems; carries out preventative maintenance work; performs major and minor overhauls on mechanical and related electrical equipment associated with the Canadian Embassy's real property assets in Washington, D.C.; conducts operating patrols of low pressure hot water boilers, chillers, air handling systems and special purpose systems (i.e. water coolers, walk-in freezers) and performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

TENURE:Temporary for one year, with a possible extension for a second year (and possible permanent appointment)

LEVEL:If we are unable to find a fully qualified candidate, we will consider candidates for a lower level and provide the required training.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Successful completion of secondary school or equivalent;
  2. Experience in the operations of chillers and heating systems;
  3. Experience in plumbing systems;
  4. Experience in steam boilers;
  5. Eligible for Canadian Government Reliability Status clearance; and
  6. Fluency in English.

RATED REQUIREMENTS:

Those candidates who meet the Experience requirements will be invited to do a written test that will cover the Knowledge requirements. Candidates who pass the written exam will then be invited to an interview for the Abilities and Personal Suitability.

KNOWLEDGE:

  1. Basic knowledge of fire alarm systems and their operation;
  2. Basic knowledge of boiler systems and their operation;
  3. Basic knowledge of computerized lighting systems and their operations;
  4. Basic knowledge of refrigeration;
  5. Basic knowledge of pneumatics;
  6. Basic knowledge of electricity;
  7. Basic knowledge of a computerized building maintenance system;
  8. Basic knowledge of industry standards in the areas of Occupational Health and Safety; and
  9. Basic knowledge of the proper handling of hazardous materials.

ABILITIES:

  1. Ability to plan, organize and implement the repair and operation of mechanical equipment;
  2. Ability to interpret blueprints and schematic diagrams;
  3. Ability to analyse and resolve problems; and
  4. Ability to work under pressure.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Boiler operating licence or demonstrating the ability to obtain one within 2 years.

The interview will consist of a series of questions designed to evaluate each applicant's knowledge, abilities and personal suitability for the position. In addition, tests may be conducted, if necessary, to assist the selection board in assessing the applicants' qualifications and skills.
