Transport Canada works to improve safety at
railway crossings and monitors Canada's rail infrastructure
in areas such as its impact on the environment and sustainable transportation,
safety and accessibility. We also play a role in the transport of dangerous goods.

Rail infrastructure
- Accessible transportation - Transport Canada is working to develop and promote strategies and policies that seek to provide accessibility for persons with disabilities, seniors, and other citizens with unique needs.

- Canadian Transportation Agency's code of practice designed to improve the
accessibility of rail travel to persons with disabilities.
- Rail
bridges - Transport Canada is responsible for the safety oversight of
federally regulated railway bridges. Oversight activities include: promotion,
monitoring and enforcement.
- Railway crossings facts - Transport Canada has a permanent safety inspection
program to monitor railway crossings, to ensure standards are met under the
Railway Safety Act, and to identify areas for improvement.
The TDG Directorate serves as the major source of regulatory development,
information and guidance on dangerous goods transport for the public, industry
and government employees.
- CANUTEC is the Canadian Transport Emergency Centre operated by Transport
Canada to assist emergency response personnel in handling dangerous goods
emergencies.
