The Surface branch in Prairie and Northern Region, is comprised of Railway Safety Engineering, Railway Safety Operations and Equipment and Transportation of Dangerous Goods divisions. They enforce regulations and promote the safe operation of Canadian railways and the safe handling, storage and transportation of dangerous goods in the Region.

Offices are located in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Calgary.

Motor vehicle licensing and highway safety falls under provincial jurisdiction.

The Road Safety branch is headquartered in Ottawa, and deals with motor vehicle safety, through public education, the enforcement of vehicle construction and importation standards, and the monitoring and investigation of safety related defects.
