Advanced technology vehicles
Cleaner cars will help make for a greener planet. That’s because
transportation accounts for 25 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions -
three-quarters of it from road transportation.
Transport Canada is working with the automotive industry to help bring safe
and environmentally friendly advanced technology vehicles onto the Canadian
market. These vehicles are powered by fuel cells, batteries, low-carbon fuels or
advanced gasoline and diesel engines. They include gasoline-electric hybrid
vehicles and vehicles using advanced power trains and light-weight materials. At
the same time, these vehicles provide the safety, emissions, reliability and
performance consumers expect in today’s automobiles.
Advanced technology vehicle experts at Transport Canada are currently
evaluating a fleet of fuel-efficient advanced technology vehicles from around
the world. Some of these vehicles are now available in Canada. The vehicles are
going through comprehensive inspections, on-road evaluations, instrumented track
tests and formal laboratory tests.
