Thinking of giving a boat tour?

Transport Canada Marine Safety Inspectors are working with small vessel operators across Canada to enhance the safety of small tour boat operations. Owners and operators must ensure their vessels meet national construction and maintenance standards, and that all crew be trained and certified to deal with marine emergencies. In addition, all mandatory safety and lifesaving equipment must be available and accessible on board in the event of an emergency.

Operators contacting their local Transport Canada Centre to request a first/initial inspection can initiate this safety check to receive a decal, part of the Small Vessel Monitoring and Inspection Program designed for vessels ranging from 0-15 gross tons and carrying a maximum of 12 passengers. Once the vessel has been inspected and found compliant, the operator will receive a valid Transport Canada Notice of Inspection Certificate and decal (57.5 KB) PDF to be positioned in a highly visible location on the vessel.

This decal assures paying passengers that the vessel has been inspected at least once and has met the safety requirements. Transport Canada will be promoting this safety campaign to the public over the 2005-2006 seasons.

Operators requiring further information about the decal (vessel inspection certificate) should contact their nearest Transport Canada Centre or visit passengers to find out about promotion of the campaign.
