CONFEDERATION BRIDGE TOLL RATES

The Confederation Bridge linking Prince Edward Island with New Brunswick was opened in 1997 and has been operated since then by Strait Crossing Development Inc. (SCDI).

The Confederation Bridge toll rates and structure are governed by the Bridge Operating Agreement, under the responsibility of Transport Canada. Under the agreement, SCDI may apply each year to change both the toll structure (vehicle groupings or classes) and the toll rates (charges for each vehicle group). The bridge operator is entitled to increase toll rates every January 1st to adjust for inflation, by an amount not to exceed three-quarters of the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) over the previous calendar year.

When the bridge operator requests a toll rate increase, Transport Canada reviews the bridge operator’s submission for the toll rate increase to ensure that the calculations are in accordance with the Bridge Operating Agreement.

Under the agreements signed between SCDI and the Government of Canada, there are no links between traffic levels, maintenance costs and tolls. All maintenance costs are the responsibility of the bridge operator. The agreement to construct, operate and maintain the bridge ensures that the federal government will incur no additional financial costs.
