A history of commercial and industrial activity has resulted in contaminated
sites at some of the facilities operated or managed by Transport Canada.
Transport Canada is committed to managing its contaminated sites in a
responsible manner.
To ensure this commitment is addressed, Transport Canada has
an ongoing contaminated site management program, and a management policy that
requires all contaminated sites on Transport Canada lands to be identified,
classified, managed and recorded in a consistent manner. This program is
coordinated by the Environmental Evaluation and Mitigation section within the
Environmental Affairs Directorate.
Transport Canada, as a member of the interdepartmental
Contaminated
Sites Management Working Group, participated in the development of a Federal
Contaminated Sites Management Framework which was undertaken by Treasury Board
Secretariat. The framework consists of a series of policies and best practice
advisories that promote a consistent federal approach to contaminated site
management.
Information regarding Transport Canada’s contaminated sites is available in
the Federal
Contaminated Sites and Solid Waste Landfills Inventory.
Further information regarding the department’s contaminated sites
management program is available in the department's Environmental
Management System and by sending an e-mail to env@tc.gc.ca
