TABLING OF THE MASTER PLAN FOR THE
PORT OF CAP AUX MEULES, MAGDELEN ISLANDS

CAP AUX MEULES, Quebec - Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre announced today the tabling of the master plan for the Port of Cap aux Meules in Magdelen Islands.

"The primary objective of this master plan is to enable Transport Canada to develop a vision in terms of port facilities in the Port of Cap aux Meules," said Mr. Lapierre. "This master plan will serve as a reference tool for safe, secure and efficient development of the port facilities."

The master plan was formulated over the past year as part of the consultation process in which local stakeholders actively participated. The Port of Cap aux Meules master plan includes proposed orientations for the short, medium and long term with the view of promoting the optimal utilization of port facilities.

Proposals include improvement of the commercial wharf according to the standards of the new Marine Transportation Security Regulations, a more suitable division of areas of activity, securing of the fishing wharf work areas, and expansion of the fish offloading areas. The building of a spur wharf and an additional wharf for mid-shore fishers, expansion of the commercial wharf, and demolition of certain buildings are also part of the proposed projects. The development of these projects would be implemented by a number of promoters, including Transport Canada.

"I am especially pleased that proposals contained in this master plan were gathered through consultations with stakeholders and users of the port," added Mr. Lapierre. "The goal of the proposed orientations is to better respond to the ever-growing development of Magdelen Islands, and as a proud "Madelinot", I am happy with the outcome of the process."

The Port of Cap aux Meules is classified as a remote port under the terms of the National Marine Policy. It is the main gateway for passengers and goods to and from Magdelen Islands. The port facilities are used for diverse activities, including trade, fishing, industrial marine transportation and tourist transportation, and also serve as a marina.
