A JOB IN TRANSPORTATION,
A DESTINATION OF CHOICE:

A BROCHURE TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE
DISCOVER THE WORLD OF TRANSPORTATION

MONTREAL (QUEBEC)— Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre announced today the launch of a brochure and of a Web site specifically aimed at Quebec’s young people, to help develop skills in and knowledge about the transportation sector. The launch took place at the career and education event Salon éducation et salon formation carrière de Montréal 2005.

The brochure entitled A Job in Transportation, a Destination of Choice and the Web site www.tc.gc.ca/youth/quebec are designed to make Quebec’s young people aware of careers in the field of transportation, while helping this sector cope with an expected shortage of labour and prepare a new generation of workers. Although demand for transportation services is on the rise, the workforce is aging, the number of new recruits in the transportation field is diminishing and specialized workers are lacking in certain areas.

“World class, sustainable transportation systems, such as Canada’s, require the vision and energy of an innovative transportation sector, driven by a highly skilled workforce,” said Minister Lapierre. “This initiative reflects the Government of Canada’s commitment toward encouraging job market newcomers to select a transportation career.”

Produced as part of the transportation skills development process and designed in response to the many employment issues faced by the transportation industry, the brochure A Job in Transportation, a Destination of Choice was developed in conjunction with the Quebec’s sectoral committees representing the four modes of transportation: aviation, rail, road and marine.

The brochure A Job in Transportation, a Destination of choice and the Web site meet the objectives of the Government of Canada’s Innovation Strategy for skills development that will help build a first-class workforce.

“This brochure and this Web site are tools that will help players involved in transportation encourage the most talented young Canadians to pursue careers in this industry,” added Minister Lapierre.
