Cable ferry project between Clarence-Rockland, Ontario and Thurso, Quebec
THURSO, Quebec - Transport Canada would like to communicate some important
information to residents of the Clarence-Rockland, Ontario and Thurso, Quebec
regions pertaining to a possible project for a cable ferry between the two
cities.
Transport Canada would also like to specify that such a project must be
submitted to rigorous assessment and approval procedures pursuant to applicable
legislation, such as the Canada Shipping Act and the Navigable Waters
Protection Act. A project of this type also generally requires an
environmental assessment that takes public comments into account.
The Department will only be able to review such a project if it is submitted
by its proponent. No such application has been submitted to the department to
date.
Should such a request be submitted, Transport Canada will thoroughly review
the matter to ensure that all regulations have been met before issuing the
authorizations and permits that would allow the project proponent to begin
operating a ferry service.
Furthermore, contrary to certain locally circulated comments, only ferry
services located in designated remote regions are eligible for funding from
Transport Canada. This is not the case of either Thurso and Clarence-Rockland.
